CES' New Intern: Evelyn Poitras. Well, this is my first blog and my second day at CES. CES was initially the acronym for Canadian Eco-tourism Services but has evolved to simply being the name for this organization which offers community development services particularly targeting Indigenous communities. My first introduction to CES was as an elected Councillor for my band Peepeekisis, Saskatchewan in 2010. I came across an opportunity to apply for free services related to potential tourism opportunities and this was the beginning of a friendship with Amanda Huculak of CES who eventually came to visit us on Peepeekisis. inclusive resort in Varadero, Cuba. All-inclusives
really aren’t my preference; I’d rather find a small locally owned hotel and explore
my surroundings, try to meet the locals, and come home with a real sense of the
place I visited. In this case I didn’t have that choice, though the

Seine River First Nation. Jason and I traveled to Seine River First Nation this past
week – a small Ojibway community situated on Wild Potato Lake in Northwest Ontario.
We met with Tom Johnson and Roger Spencer, Councillors for the Band, to discuss
opportunities for sustainable tourism development. Tom and I first connected
through the Community Tourism Vitalization Initiative (CTVI) spearheaded by CES

A Northern Double Header. Last week I visited two very hospitable clients in the James Bay region of Quebec (known as Eeyou Istchee by the Crees). My first stop was the Cree Nation of Nemaska, where I met with Joshua Iserhoff, Tourism Officer. We discussed Nemaska’s Pando Terra™ Tourism Plan, the current project we’re collaborating on. After, I spent a few days in the Cree Nation of Wemindji to work with Roberta Georgekish on her ongoing professional development as the new Tourism Officer for the community. Beaches, Casabe and Dancing. In the summer of 2008, Jessica and I ventured to Honduras to work on a community-based tourism project in the Garifuna communities of Rio Esteban, Nueva Armenia, East End and Chachaguate. After a 2 ½ hour bumpy ride from La Ceiba on a yellow school bus we received a warm welcome at our first destination, the beautiful beach town of Rio Esteban. The local people’s laughter, singing and dancing was contagious and we both felt an instant connection with the place. Click here for the full story.

Peepeekisis Cree Nation CTVI Site Visit. Last week on November 17 and 18 Amanda
traveled across the prairies to visit the community of Peepeekisis Cree
Nation in Saskatchewan. Amanda received a warm welcome and met with

Amanda Presents at the Centro Paraguayo de Estudios Canadienses. Amanda
was recently in Paraguay on behalf of the University of Manitoba to
collaborate on a project involving sustainable community development
using tourism as a catalyst. On Monday, May 24, Amanda Huculak presented on An Organic Approach to Creating Sustainable Communities
at the Centro Paraguayo de Estudios Canadienses in Asuncion, Paraguay. A
representative of the Ministry of Tourism for Paraguay, delegates of
the Centro Paraguayo de Estudios Canadienses and approximately 40
University students studying sustainable tourism attended. The

Shammy Outfitters. Jessica Braun, CES team member, has just returned from her visit to the
future home of Shammy Outfitter’s fishing camp. Jessica is working on
the business plan for Shammy Outfitters, which will be owned and
operated by Michael Mayappo and Johnny Mark – brothers from the Cree
Nation of Wemindji. The fishing camp is set to open in the summer of
